Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Reflections for Easter Sunday - April 21, 2019

7 Lessons of Easter

1. There is limit to what the evil one can do but God does the impossible. Satan thought that the worst he could do was to kill Jesus, but God raised him to new life, a life that has no limit anymore.  A life that is invincible, beyond the reach of all harm. The worst that evil can do is just the beginning of great things God will do in our lives. God will place you where the devil can no more have access to you.

2. Whatever pain and anguish we go through, there will be a third day experience. God can change our stories when we place our trust in him. At night there are tears but joy comes with dawn. He will turn the tomb of defeat and tears the enemy has placed us into a womb of joy and greatness.

3. God cannot be out done in showing mercy. What is worse than killing the only son of God in such a cruel manner? yet God forgives. No sin is greater than God's mercy.

4. The risen Lord does not dwell in the past. He does not call to mind how he was abandoned, betrayed, falsely accused. He wants to start a fresh with everyone. We are new creatures in Christ.  Old things have passed away... Let's bury past hurts in his tomb drawing strength from the risen Christ to start a new.

5. Faithfulness will be rewarded. Mary Magdalene was the first to see the ressurected Jesus and be commissioned to witness to the risen Lord, she became an apostle to the apostles,  because even in death he did not abandon Jesus. She loved Jesus beyond death.

6.  The risen Lord goes in search of his apostles. God always takes the initiative to restore us to himself. Let's be at the forefront of working for peace and reconciliation.

7. The risen Lord restores faith. He patiently  brings his apostles back to faith in him. Is your faith weak? Are you faltering? Christ does not condemn you, he has come to restore you to faith.

πŸ™‡‍♀As we contemplate the risen Christ, may the new life he brings flourish in us. Amen. Happy Easter beloved in Christ.

Fr. Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Holy Thursday, April 18, 2019

“If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.” Jn.13:1-15.

The message of Jesus was so compelling and has continued to fire many imaginations  because he taught what he was already living out. A picture is often worth more than  a thousand words.  He practiced what he preached. He taught his disciples how to pray because he was a man of deep prayer. When he asked his disciples to trust in providence they believed him because, the Son of man himself had no where to lay his head. Yet he was never stranded.  It was not difficult for his disciples to understand his message of self denial because our Lord himself lived a life of renunciation.  No show of affluence or vanity. When he taught them to forgive he will forgive those who took his life with so much cruelty. When he taught them the power of humble service, he stooped low to wash their dirty smelly feet. He spoke with authority because everything he asked of us he was already living it out . They knew him more as a witness than a teacher. This is the missing link in our preaching  today- the force of personal witness.  This explains often why our message does not move hearts because they don't come from our personal experience, mere lip service.

πŸ™‡‍♀Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like thine. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Friday, March 15, 2019

"Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?" Ezekiel 18:23.

πŸ—£It is ungodly to wish evil to the wicked even when they persist in wrong doing. God delights in their conversion and restoration and we are called to do likewise. Spend time today to pray for people who are far away from God. This surely gladens the heart of our maker πŸ™‡‍♀Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like yours. Amen

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Thursday, March 14, 2019

"For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Mt.7:8

πŸ—£Nothing should ever impede us from praying. Do you lack faith? How will you have faith if you don't pray often? In talking to God and listening to him often our faith grows stronger. Are you living in grave sin? How will you overcome if don't cry out to God for mercy and help often? Pray constantly. Be not discouraged no matter what you are facing. He will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory. Amen. Shalom.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily wednesday, March 13, 2019

"When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out." (Jonah 3: 10).

πŸ—£Every sincere effort to repent and turn from evil will not go unnoticed and unrewarded by God. His anger lasts for a moment but his favor all through life. No matter what our past have been, when we make sincere efforts to repent God remembers our sins no more. This is the good news of our faith. Shalom .

πŸ™‡‍♀Give me again the joy of your help. With a Spirit of fervor sustain me O God. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Tuesday, March 12, 2019

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him." (Matthew 6: 8).

In the prayer that Jesus thought us  we have one of the most comforting and reassuring scriptures.  It tells us that the God we pray to is not a task master but a loving father, our daddy. He is ever willing to hear us. He is more than able to do what our hearts truly yearns for.
He has the means to satisfy every desire of our heart. Prayer makes us willing and able to do his will. He answers us not because of who we are but because of who He  is,  a compassionate God.

This should make us eager and confident to come into his presence. The psamist says. "But I through the greatness of your love have access to your house... " Ps. 5:7

πŸ™‡‍♀Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Saturday, March 9, 2019

"Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, "Follow me."
And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him."
Lk 5:27ff

πŸ—£Mathew was a public sinner, hated by many and often treated as an outcast, a sold out. Yet the ill treatment he received from people hardened his heart the more. However, just one tender loving gaze from Jesus made a huge difference in his life. It is only true love that can melt hardened hearts. It is the warmth of God's  Love that can set our hearts on fire  for his good purpose, regardless of what our past have been. Jesus loves you unconditionally as he loved Mathew the public sinner. When we open our hearts to his love, he set us on fire for his kingdom transforming us radically from the inside. Drink of that love this morning. Feel his loving gaze on you. It is the medicine you desperately need for your soul.

πŸ™‡‍♀Jesus I trust in you. I am delivered, I am set free. Your goodness follows me. Your love accompanies and accomplishes great things in me. I can love because I am loved unconditionally. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily Friday, March 8, 2019

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish:
releasing those bound unjustly,
untying the thongs of the yoke;
Setting free the oppressed,
breaking every yoke;
Sharing your bread with the hungry,
sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;
Clothing the naked when you see them,
and not turning your back on your own. Is. 58:6ff

πŸ—£Our fast must go beyond merely  starving our bodies of food and drink. It must aim at renouncing evil conduct in our dealings with one another. It is purifying our hearts of earthbound passions and desires that often gets in the way of doing God's will.  It is not living for ourselves anymore but for Christ. As Paul said, 'It is no longer I that live, but Christ that lives in me.'  It is not gratifying our sensual desires anymore but being eager to do the will of the Father, making it our daily food.  The goal of my fast should be to have in me the mind of Christ. To be meek and humble, eager to forgive and reconcile because I have renounced malice and vengefulness.  To be fair in my dealings with everyone because I have renounced greed and arogance. To come to the aid of those in need and never be indifferent to the plight of the lowly and afflicted, because I am no longer full of my self.

πŸ™‡‍♀Father, I can't do this on my own.  The spirit is willing but the flesh is often weak. I have a flesh that has a mind and will of its own. But nothing is impossible for you Lord. Make me willing and able to fast in a way that pleases you. Not my will but your will Father.  Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily from Wednesday, February 13, 2019

"From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,  adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.  All these evils come from within and they defile.”  (Mark 7: 21 - 23)."

Ultimately we can't blame the devil, upbringing, or society for  the corruption in us. Our Lord tells us sin comes from our hearts. This is not bad news because it means it is within us. It is not beyond us.  We are not puppets but humans created with the power to make decisions. We can do something about the perverse situation of our hearts. Moreso, God is at work in us to make us ever willing and able. When impure thoughts rise in our hearts let's call on the name of Jesus, every knee bows at that name. As often as we invoke that name every stronghold of evil in our hearts will give way.

πŸ™‡‍♀A pure heart create for me O God, put a steadfast spirit within me.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily from Tuesday, February 12, 2019

"This people honor me with their lips but their heart is far from me". Mt.15:8

True worship is a matter of the heart, not mere religous observance, an outward show nor an out-pour of emotions.
A heart free from falsehood, malice and dishonesty is always welcome and acceptable in God's presence. When we fall into sin God is ever willing to forgive us if we acknowledge our faults and are willing to make ammends.  Yet, he can't stand hypocrisy, a deceitful heart, a malicious intent to circumvent his laws and commands, let alone justify our actions when we are clearly wrong. He hates it when we lie in his name, using our religiosity to deceive people for our personal gain.

πŸ™‡‍♀A humble and contrite heart O God you do not spurn. All I bring to you this morning is a broken Spirit. Be merciful unto me a poor sinner. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily from Monday, February 11, 2019

"Whatever villages or towns or countryside he [Jesus] entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed."  (Mark 6: 56).

No one who came to Jesus, left empty handed. Anyone who touched him was healed. We desperately need his touch today, we who are often afraid, anxious, broken, wounded, lonely, weak and sick. We don't have to search for him. He has come to us as he went to their towns, villages and farms. He is so within reach for everyone. All we need do is turn to him in faith and we will find solace in him. He will heal us and bind our wounds freeing us from all our ills.

πŸ™‡‍♀Lord Jesus, everyone who touched you was healed. Lord, I have assurance that my case will not be different. It is settled as I turn to you this morning. Amen.

Fr Patrick Etuk, MSP - Homily from 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time year C, Feb. 10, 2019

"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain". 1cor. 15:10

1. Grace is favour, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life." It is a spontaneous gift from God  "generous, free and totally unexpected and undeserved" that takes the form of divine favor, love, clemency, and a share in the divine life of God.

2. We could do nothing except by God's grace. All our effort will come to nothing, except by his grace. All our good will turn to ill except by his grace.

3. God"s grace is available to everyone no matter the condition of the person. No matter how sinful you are, you are a possible beneficiary of God's grace.  In fact the more miserable we are the greater his love and even his willingness to show us mercy. Paul is a great example. He persecuted Christians and hated them with a passion but God showered him mercy and transformed him even when he did not ask for it.

4. God's grace is not automatic, we must respond accordingly so that his grace will be effective and fruitful in our lives.
We must tap into his grace. We must position ourselves to receive grace. How?

5. Let us  acknowledge our sins and unworthiness. When Isaiah recognised his faults and humbled himself, God sent his angel to purify him and he was instantly cleansed.

6. We must be available. God's grace Will be fruitful in us when we are available for his purposes, Isaiah says here I am send me. He didn't even know the details and what demands the Lord will make, he simply abandoned himself. Whenever we yield to God we experience the power of his grace. Lord, grant us the grace to yield completely to you. Amen.

7. We must be docile. Being docile is being willing to take instructions from the other, not living according to our own whims and caprices. Paul tells us that the gospel is able to save us if we live by it. This is what Peter did he acted on the instruction of Christ. Jesus told him, pay out the net into the deep for a catch. He obeyed in spite of the fact that he did not see reasons to do so. Afterall, he had laboured all night and caught nothing. But when he obeyed,  he neted such a huge catch that he needed help to bring to shore. Breakthrough, open doors await you as you are docile to Jesus, but when we live in rebellion we keep moving in circles and not making any progress. Obedience will bring immeasurable blessings to your life. This is grace. By his grace you can live in obedience. Amen.

8. God wants us to be instruments of his grace. Jesus tells Peter, I will make you fishers of men.
The greatest service we can ever render in this world is to make ourselves available to bring back our fallen brethren to the fold. We must have a burden for souls and be co-redeemers with Christ.  This task today is more urgent than ever. We must be like Isaiah saying here I am send me. And if this disposition is lacking in us let us fervently ask for it and God Will grant it to us. Grace is not for the capable but for the available. There are people lost out there. Ask God to use you to bring them back no matter how  deep in sin there are and far from his grace. The grace of God will not be fruitless in you. Amen.

Fr. Patrick's Homily - Nov. 11, 2018

"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood." Mk. 12:38-44.

1. God does not see the way we humans see, what we sometimes value and consider dignifying is repugnant to him. We humans are carried away often by large sums that people donate but God sees the humility, the sacrifices, the sincerity, the faith,  the tears of the donor.  He knows the story behind every gift.
It is the spirit behind the giving that moves the heart of God not necessarily the amount one gives.

2. The rich must  give more, not  from their surplus but from their substance, what they have to live on. The golden rule of giving is give until it hurts . Yes. For those who are sowing in tears will surely sing when they reap.

3. There was no one who was so poor that he had nothing to offer. There is no excuse for not giving. We can always give our time, talents and energy to work for the kingdom. If the poor widow who was in dire need of charity could give her last penny, no one is exempt from giving.

4.  Giving will not impoverish anyone, it rather makes room for us to receive abundantly from God's  store house that never runs dry. Sacrificial giving positions you for uncommon providence, For a full measure pressed down shaken together and rolling over will be poured on the  laps of the one who gives generously and freely (The widow of Zarephath). The generous of heart will never lack.

πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™Give me again the joy of your help. With a Spirit of fervor sustain me O God. Amen.
